  • Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted above the sump pit, keeping it dry. These pumps are easier to service but typically louder and used in narrow or shallow basins.

A battery backup option is recommended in areas with frequent power outages to maintain protection during electrical failures.

Once the hole is dug, concrete or gravel is used to create a stable, level base. A pre-formed sump basin or a heavy-duty liner is then installed inside the pit to prevent cave-ins. Connecting Drainage Systems

The discharge pipe directs water away from the foundation, ideally at least 10 feet from the house. PVC pipe is commonly used for durability and ease of fitting. Installation should include a check valve to prevent water from flowing back into the pit after pumping.

Connections must be sealed tightly using appropriate fittings and waterproof sealant. The pipe should slope downward away from the house to ensure free drainage. It is essential to inspect local regulations for required drainage distances or restrictions.

Testing and Maintenance Tips

After installation, the system requires thorough testing. Pour water into the pit to raise the float switch and confirm the pump activates and discharges water properly. Check for leaks, unusual noises, or vibrations.

Regular maintenance includes cleaning the pit of debris and checking the float switch for free movement. Inspect the discharge pipe annually and confirm the check valve’s function. Testing the pump a few times per year increases reliability, especially before wet seasons.
